Carroll County Fall Things to Do This 2026 Season

Autumn in Carroll County used to run on a single track: pick apples at Baugher's, drive home. That version still exists, and it is still good. What changed in 2026 is the second track running alongside it — a Main Street calendar that finally matches the farm calendar week for week, with restaurants and shops that opened after last October's leaves came down. The shift worth noticing

For years the local rhythm was farm-heavy and town-light. The Ag Center in Westminster and the orchards ran the show from mid-September through the first frost, and downtown Westminster and Sykesville handled the after-hours. That balance has flipped this year. Downtown Sykesville alone is running Sippin' On Summer on September 19, the Sykesville Fun Fall Festival on October 10, Trick or Treat on Main Street on October 25, and a Craft Beer Festival on November 14. That is four town-scale events between the equinox and Thanksgiving, on top of everything the farms are already doing.

The bigger shift is the food. Sykesville's old railroad stop, empty for most residents' memory, is finally becoming a restaurant. Construction on Lib's Grill at the former Sykesville railroad stop is expected to begin in early 2026, at what the operators describe as "a living piece of history, listed on the National Register of Historic Places." The building itself has been sitting on Main Street since 1884 along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, serving passengers until 1949. Watching that project move through fall is its own quiet ritual for anyone who walks Main Street on weekends.

A weekend-by-weekend anchor list

Rather than a monster calendar, here are the specific weekends worth planning around, with the source event and the town.

Two things to notice on that table. First, October 3 is a genuine double-header at the Ag Center, with the farmers' market and the Fall Marketplace running the same morning at 706 Agricultural Center Drive. Second, October 25 lets a family do the corn maze at 2 p.m. in Westminster and still make Trick or Treat on Sykesville's Main Street by 4. The county is small enough that this actually works.

The businesses that weren't here last October

Local writeups this year highlight a handful of openings that reset the downtown map. Westminster's Main Street picked up Collision Course, a soul food restaurant scheduled to open in late summer or early fall from owners Tony and Ashley Gerald, who had been running pop-ups at local businesses and brunch at River Downs Golf Course. Around the corner, Akira Ramen recently opened a Westminster location with an extensive menu in a modern atmosphere. In Sykesville, The Local Motive opened early this year on Main Street, offering craft beer, fine wine, cocktails and creative mocktails alongside a snack and sandwich menu, and Hannah Brookfield opened BotaniGal in Sykesville.

The Sykesville dining bench is deeper than it was a year ago for another reason. 7556 Main Street Bistro is now open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch under Keith Watson, who previously ran Dandelion Bistro in Glenelg and has now relocated to Sykesville's Main Street. That gives one small downtown three genuine dinner options within a two-block walk: Beck's, 7556, and The Local Motive for the drinks-and-a-plate crowd.

Taneytown deserves a mention too. Finch Market opened in the heart of Taneytown with a selection of gourmet groceries, gifts, and curated beer and wine. If your fall drives usually skip north of Westminster, this is the year to reroute.

Building a farm day that isn't a repeat of last year

The pick-your-own script is well worn, but the county keeps adding structure that makes it easier to string stops together instead of committing an entire Saturday to one farm. The Carroll County 2026 Agritourism Passport runs June through October and covers more than 25 local farms and agricultural events. New for this year, the Passport is available digitally through the Let's Rallie app, which means you can check in on a phone instead of chasing a paper stamp.

Baugher's remains the anchor. It is a family-run pick-your-own orchard, seasonal farm market and petting zoo at 1015 Baugher Road in Westminster, and the on-site restaurant has been serving country-style meals since 1948. Pair that with an afternoon on the Carroll Wine Trail, which the state describes as home to Maryland's oldest wine festival. Two names worth knowing if you have not been:

• Old Westminster, a sibling-owned winery focused on wild-yeast fermentations and "natural wines"
• Brothers Ridge Cider in New Windsor, Carroll County's first women-owned hard cidery, dedicated to showcasing local agriculture through handcrafted ciders

For families with kids old enough to want a full production, the Corn Maze at the Ag Center runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from September 19 through November 1, with a Halloween opening on October 31. That's a full six-weekend window, which matters if the first Saturday you pencil in gets rained out.

The change that matters is not any single opening. It is that a resident can now put together a Saturday that runs orchard in the morning, downtown Sykesville for lunch at a restaurant that did not exist last fall, and back to the Ag Center by 4 for the market, without any part of the day feeling like filler.

After dark and closer to Halloween

A few smaller notes for the second half of October, when the pumpkin-patch energy tapers and people want something with a little more atmosphere.

The Ag Center itself hosts a run of smaller events worth checking, including AKC Scent Work weekends and a Trunk or Treat aimed at kids 15 and younger. On the Sykesville side, Main Street's Trick or Treat afternoon on October 25 is the closest thing the county has to a downtown Halloween tradition, and it lines up with the corn-maze schedule to make a full Saturday possible.

For the drinking-age crowd, Sykesville's Craft Beer Festival on November 14 is a genuinely new addition to the fall calendar as an anchor for post-leaves November, when there is usually nothing left to do outside. Pair it with the Christmas Farmer's Market opening at the Ag Center a week earlier, and the county has stretched its fall season a full three weeks longer than it ran two years ago.

A small logistical note

Two of the county's most reliable Saturday events land on the same address. The Farmers' Market Celebrating Fall and the Fall Marketplace both run October 3 at the Ag Center, and parking there fills quickly on double-event mornings.
